MLTF - Progress Report

I picked this book up for odd ten and twenty minute intervals throughout the day. New characters are popping up like daisies. There is this mysterious Guardian character who seems to be some sort of elven hottie who also happens to command a platoon of other Guardians. There his Raine's uncle and his student, who is a sort of kid-brother type to Raine.

She's also in touch with this elven intelligence network, which I find intriguing.

There's a lot of background information being fed to the reader at this point. I kind of wish the author chose to bring such info up as needed, because sometimes I find it a bit hard to keep up with. But since I haven't had a good stretch to read today (I have a young disabled daughter), that may be my own fault.

Tia,
I just now found your blog. Thank you so much for choosing MLTF as your first review! As to my goblins, I thought I'd try a new twist. The goblins in any book I'd ever read were short, gnarled, and had a bad case of post-nasal drip. I thought hot & sexy would be a fun and different way to go. Yep, I confess, I have read most of the Stephanie Plum books. Any book that can make me laugh out loud is a good book. ; ) And I adore my cover art. The artist is Aleta Rafton and she did an absolutely amazing job. I didn't see it until it was finished. I was blown away. There's nothing like having an awesome cover on your first book.

I'm thrilled that you found my little blog. And I'm actually a little amazed. Not many people know about it yet. Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks for reviewing MLTF! I love the idea of review as you read. Very cool. I'll keep popping in to check on your progress. And if there's things about the book that you don't like, don't hesitate to say so. I'm always open to feedback.

BTW -- In the next week or so, I'll be starting a blog of my own over at www.lisashearin.com. Please stop by and visit.

Hi Tia, I don't write fantasy and I'm several books past my debut, so I hope you don't mind my coming by. ::grin:: I loved MLTF and not just because Lisa and I share the same agent. I loved the book because it's exceedingly well-written, funny, snarky, fast-pace and snarky. Did I mention snarky? ::grin again::

Tia wrote: Terms like "home security", "pays the rent on time", and "cooling my heels" pop up regularly. I am ambivalent about it. On the one hand, it gives the book a breezy voice. On the other hand, they jar me out of what is supposed to be a medieval fantasy.

I had no problem with the colloqualisms used in the book. I didn't assume it was medieval anything. It's its own world--at least, that's how I read it (and it's been several months so I'm drawing on my tired brain right now).

I sometimes get the same response to the characters or worlds in my books--a reviewer or blogger will comment about the book being 'far future'. Uh, no. It's my characters' present day. And none of them have ever heard of a planet named Earth.

So that's how I took the world in MLTF--in a galaxy far, far away, as someone much more talented than I once said. ::grin::

But anyway, I think your blog is a fabulous idea and I look forward to checking back and learning about gems from you.

You might also want to check out Kimber An's blog--she's a mom who reviews in a very similar fashion.

Her main blog is: http://starcaptainsdaughter.blogspot.com/

and her reviews are here:

Maybe you two could link up and share visitors?

Again, great site--keep it coming! ~Linnea

Thanks so much for your kind words. I do see your point of view concerning the colloquialisms. As I said, I was ambivalent about it. And it certainly is not stopping me from reading!

And thank you for pointing me to Kimber An's blogs. I will check her out.

Oh, yes, I've done reviews like this before! You know how it is, squeezing in a few minutes of reading while separating fighting children, catching flying spaghetti, and ducking when the dishwasher explodes.

For some reason, Alaska doesn't get in Fantasy new releases too quickly. They might at the big B & N in Anchorage, but not around here. Our local library which is slower than molasis running uphill in January in Nome, got Mercedes Lackey's last book in before our little stores!

I didn't mind the contemporary-sounding voice either. This is probably because I get sick of all Fantasy novels sounding the same. I'm very picky about Fantasy and this is one reason why. I've only read the first two chapters from Lisa's website. I'm still waiting for the book to arrive in the mail.
