Matthew Jarpe on Author Promotional Activities

The author of RADIO FREEFALL has a post on "what worked, what sucked", which had me giggling like an idiot here in my cube at work (and inspired me to sneak in a blog post).

Thanks for the tip on this fun interview. Re: his comments about book tours: some of the loneliest people in the world I've seen were authors on tour at the front of my local B&N. I usually stop just to give an encouraging "how's it goin'?" I don't usually buy a book at that moment, but they seem grateful for the conversation and I often later find myself thumbing through their titles with greater interest. Like many things, a book tour might have indirect, hard-to-quantify consequences that benefit the author and reader.

That's a good point. I've seen such authors as well. I think it's intimidating to the customer to go up to someone who is all alone like that, so maybe it would help if these authors would bring along a friend to sit with them.
