There is an article by Morgan Howell in the current issue of the Del Rey Internet Newsletter. His article is the second one down. I found it fascinating because he based his orcs on native American matriarchal societies.
Now I really can't wait to read it!

Well, I'll have to go read it too. I get most of my ideas from real, human cultures, including Native American.
I found one of the books you reviewed here last night at B&N. I've also heard good things about Princes of the Golden Cage before.
Did you see Remy's review of Princes at http://www.thefantasyreview.com/?
I'm hoping it arrives in the
mail today.
I just received my copy of King's Property yesterday. I will be checking it ou in a few weeks.
You must live closer to NYC than I do.
Just started on King's Property myself. The impression I've gotten of the humans in the unit are that they are the scum of the army, stuck there because no decent human wants to serve with orcs.
The orcs themselves are no saints, what with their own bigotries and prejudices. I'd have to say that both species were doing their best to alienate the other.
BTW, for another anthropological study of orcs, check out John Wick's Orkworld if you can find a copy.
