Healthy Again! Plus, an Off-Topic Milestone!

My lackadaisical posting was due to ANOTHER sickness that I didn't want to bore you with until it was all over. Which it now is. Those headaches from two weeks ago turned into a dreadful sinus thing that kept me out of work two days last week. But I am ALL BETTER NOW.

And a good thing, too. I had to reschedule a certain exam that I have been meaning to take for years now (and I do mean years; it was on my performance review of a few years ago, but never happened. My manager got it to happen this year.) Anyway, I was supposed to take it last week, but I rescheduled it because I was way too sick. I took it today, and I PASSED! So, now I am a

Certified Microsoft Word Expert!
Check out my authorized logo:

What am I going to do with my shiny new credential? I have a few ideas. I have an idea for a technical book, and now that I have a credential, it may actually be sellable. I can work toward my goal of becoming an instructional designer, which is part of my greater plan to become an self-supporting freelance writer by the time I retire.

On Friday I'm taking another exam, this one for Access. Wish me luck!

Boy, I am impressed! Congrats!

I know just enough to get me into trouble. That's why I love reading your tutorials. While some of it is more than I need, I always feel confident that you know what you're talking about--and that's a great credential.

Nice work Tia! Word can be a tricky beast, but there's a lot of power under the hood if you know how to use it.

Access is next, huh? Go get 'em. I mostly work in SQL, so I'll just say:

INSERT INTO credentials VALUES ('Microsoft Access Expert')

Are you going to do Excel after Access?

Tia, first thing I am happy you are feeling well. Health is the most important thing.
Second, congratulations on your exam :)
And last, but not least, good luck with the next one ;)

I am looking forward to the review of "The Crown Conspiracy".

Brian, I wish they had an expert-level exam for Access, because I'd go for it. I might go for the Excel exam as well, but I have a lot of prep work to do--a lot more than I had to do with Word.

Thanks, everyone!

Congratulations! I had my MCP in Windows NT 4 many years ago... I could probably pass a cert exam for Excel because I love it so much. Access, no thanks, I'd rather use Query Analyzer and big boy SQL.

Sorry... geeking out...

TD, I understand perfectly, having come from an Oracle background, myself. Access makes sense in certain business environments, and my users are very productive with Access, and they love my VBA front-ends.

There has been talk over the past few years about converting the whole shebang to a SQL Server database with a VB front end, but it hasn't progressed beyond talk. I do feel stymied by VBA and Access, but so far have been able to work around their limitations.

Oh man, we run two different email platforms and one runs on Oracle. Thankfully, I don't have access to the back end because I much prefer SQL Server. Oracle isn't bad, it's just not as query-friendly for me.

Also, um, it's weird to be talking about this hahaha

Good to hear that you are well again.

Congratulations!
WORD is sometimes grueling.
At home I started to discover OpenOffice.

I learned Oracle before there were joins. We had to use sub-selects for joins. Very messy. And yes, it is odd to be talking about software development here.

Edi, I played with OpenOffice, but it didn't have the Document Map. I can't live without the Document Map. And the Navigator is a poor substitute.

Todd Newton said...

I can definitely not imagine life without joins. My hat goes off to you brave pioneers, especially since I have known some craaazy DBA's (with, shall we say, very "bold" design ideas).

Yay! Congrats, Tia! :D

Congrats, Tia! That's a cool credential. I know my way around Word pretty well and have considered trying for that credential, but I was always afraid maybe I'm not as much of an expert as I like to think I am. :)

Access, though... I've opened it and looked at it, but I can't use it worth anything.

I passed the Access test today. I got high scores on both tests, but I can't say that either of them were easy. It poked into every nook and cranny, except VBA programming.

The practice tests helped, but I don't think I'll buy a MeasureUp test again. I don't think it replicated the testing environment very well. There's another company that makes practice tests; I'm going to try them for the Excel expert test, which I probably won't try until the fall or summer.

Congratulations! on getting your access test, too. {SMILE}
