Debut Showcase: The Demon's Lexicon

The Demon's Lexicon (Amazon USA - UK - Canada)
by Sarah Rees Brennan
Margaret K. McElderry (publisher)
Excerpt

Blurb:
Nick and his brother, Alan, have spent their lives on the run from magic. Their father was murdered, and their mother was driven mad by magicians and the demons who give them power. The magicians are hunting the Ryves family for a charm that Nick’s mother stole — a charm that keeps her alive — and they want it badly enough to kill again.

Danger draws even closer when a brother and sister come to the Ryves family for help. The boy wears a demon’s mark, a sign of death that almost nothing can erase…and when Alan also gets marked by a demon, Nick is desperate to save him. The only way to do that is to kill one of the magicians they have been hiding from for so long.

Ensnared in a deadly game of cat and mouse, Nick starts to suspect that his brother is telling him lie after lie about their past. As the magicians’ Circle closes in on their family, Nick uncovers the secret that could destroy them all.

I first became aware of The Demon's Lexicon when the author's agent, Kristen Nelson, announced the sale, which was a "major" deal. Major deals for debut authors are big deals, especially when said author is under thirty, which I believe she was at the time. Ana over at The Book Smugglers raves all over this book. The demons look to be solidly in the "evil" camp so it's a strong maybe for me.

That, and it doesn't seem to have any "snark."

Okay, that's why her name sounds familiar. When I first saw her name on this debut, I thought, "Wait; she can't be a debut author, because I know I've seen her name before." But I guess it's because of all that buzz. Sigh. If only this under-thirty author could get a deal like that!

This does sound interesting. The cover guy reminds me of Tom Welling from Smallville.

Lipstick! You are brutal, Todd!

I'm with T.D. on the lipstick. Not crazy about the cover art anyway. Looks like a Twilight knock-off. (Twilight's fine, it's the knock-offs I can't stand.) But, those girlie lips! Ick. I think full lips on a guy are hot, but the color of those ones would put Marilyn Monroe to shame.

Okay--I'll admit it: I wasn't sure if that was a guy or a girl on the cover. Yoinks. But the book sounds interesting.

Hi! I found this blog when I googled Demon's Lexicon. I've read it and I loved it, and I wanted to let you know that you are mistaken about two things.
1. Demons are not just in the "evil" camp.
2. There is definitely snark.

Also, regarding an above comment. Not a Twilight knockoff. I've also read Twilight, so I can say that with confidence.

I strongly recommend this book, despite the girly-boy on the cover. I can assure you, he is actually not girly at all, and Sarah Rees Brennan is a great author.

Oh I've heard really good things about this book! I'll have to get a copy asap!

It didn't sound like a Twilight knock-off to me either. As far as snark goes, I meant first-person snark by a kick-ass female narrator. This novel doesn't seem to have that.

Too bad about the cover; it seems to be very unpopular. I hope all the good press this book is getting makes up for it. I hate to see a debut author further stymied by a poor cover.
